Chihuahuas

AKC Recognized in 1904

The Chihuahua is a national symbol of Mexico. This breed is one of the oldest in the Americas. It has a lineage that goes back to the kingdoms of pre-Columbian times. Chihuahuas have personalities similar to terriers. They are alert, intelligent dogs. They often weigh no more than 6 pounds, and can be great pets for city-dwellers. Coats come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Coats can be either long or short. A smooth, short coated Chihuahua needs only occasional brushing and regular baths. The longhaired Chihuahua needs to have his or her coat brushed a minimum of once weekly.

Chihuahuas are playful dogs, and often can get suitable exercise in a very small space. Short, slow walks are recommended to maintain the dog’s weight and condition. Overexertion should be avoided, and Chihuahuas must be carefully protected in cold weather conditions. Dog jackets or sweaters are recommended, and outdoor time during the Michigan winter months should be limited. Chihuahuas respond well to positive reinforcement training, and do well in canine sports. Treats can be a key aid in training, but overfeeding can cause obesity in Chihuahuas. High-quality dog food that is appropriate to the dog’s age, whether puppy, adult or senior, is recommended.
