Cairn Terriers are an intelligent, cheerful dog breed, often described as a big personality in a small package. Cairn Terriers were developed in Scotland to hunt small animals from cairns – which are rock piles. Cairn Terriers range in color from cream to wheaten, red, gray, black, silver, and brindle. They cannot be white, as West Highland Terriers are a separate but similar breed. However, as Cairn Terriers age, the color of their coat can change. The coat has a wiry feel, and Cairn Terriers are a low shedding dog. Cairn Terriers are generally between 9.5 and 15 inches tall, and weigh between 13 and 15 pounds.
The most famous Cairn Terrier is Terry, who was renamed Toto after starring as Toto in the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz.” Terry was born in 1933. She was owned and trained by famous Hollywood dog trainer Carl Spitz. For her participation in “The Wizard of Oz,” Terry was paid $125 per week, more than some human actors on the film. Before her death in 1945, Terry was featured in 16 total films. Some of these include: “Bright Eyes” with Shirley Temple, “The Women,” with Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford, and “Fury” with Spencer Tracey. There is a permanent memorial to Terry at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
